Home Spider Protection

There are some things you can do to protect yourself and your family from spiders, and some things only a pest control company can do. In today's article we're going to explore both sides and, hopefully, shed a little light on the topic.

Some houses attract spiders. Outside trash cans are left open so that flies can accumulate, and when those flies accumulate, the spiders come to eat them. Flowers and plants are everywhere, moistened by daily watering. This brings spiders in for a drink and a bite to eat of some tasty aphids.

These homes have tall grass to make those spider feel comfortable and plenty of clutter in the yard for them to hide in. There is an old tire, a few cinder blocks, toys littered about, and a few cords of wood right up next to the house. If your yard looks like this, it is a spider paradise.

One of the best ways you can reduce spiders, is to reduce the conditions that draw spiders to your home. Fewer spiders in your yard means fewer spiders exploring your exterior walls.

Here are a handful of other things you can do to resist spiders:

  • Make sure you're not luring flies in at night with exterior lighting or light pouring out of your windows. Flying insects love light, and spiders love flying insects.

  • When you find spider webs around your house, get rid of them. This can prompt spiders to seek a new place to lay out their fly nets.

  • Inspect all your screens, door sweeps, and weather stripping, to make sure everything is in good condition. Spiders don't need much of a hole to get in.
