Centipede, The Not-So-Famous Pest

If you have ever sat down and made a list of pests that you are concerned about coming into your home and becoming a nuisance, centipedes may not have been at the top of your list. But it’s true; centipedes and all their legs do get into homes and can become problematic and difficult to remove. At American Pest we think that it’s important for you to know about this lesser known invader so that you can stop them from using your home as their new home!

The most common type of centipede living in homes is aptly named the house centipede. Centipedes have one pair of long legs per body segment and are a brownish-yellow color. Centipedes are commonly found living in garden areas underneath mulch, rocks, stones, and leaf piles, but will come in homes while they are looking for food. They are carnivores and like to dine on worms, spiders, silverfish, and other small vertebrates. They use their venom in order to paralyze their prey; and while not super common centipedes can bite people and leave behind a painful welt that is similar to the pain of a bee sting!

Centipedes get into homes through cracks in the foundation, underneath doors, and through spaces found around utility entrances. This is why homeowners will most often see them in their kitchens, basements, and near their front door, and because they like to hide in dark damp places during the day, only coming out at night to hunt for their food.

Being nocturnal creatures means that quite often may not notice that you have a centipede infestation right away. That is until you see something quickly move out of the corner of your eye. The centipede’s quick movements and long creepy legs often startle homeowners and make them want to get rid of them as quickly as possible. We don't blame them, and that is where American Pest can come in and help!
