One of my favorite times of year is autumn or the fall season. The harvesting of crops kicks in gear throughout rural areas with trucks and trailers laden down with rich grain. The fall foliage begins bursting forth with bright, beautiful colors. People enjoy a reprieve from hot temperatures and high levels of humidity. However, this time of year is also noted for a renewed infestation of pests.
While some pests seem to disappear during this climate change, plenty of others suddenly come on the scene. These pests are simply categorized as fall pests. The most common of these are rodents, stink bugs, ants, cockroaches, spiders, and a variety of flies. Even though they represent different species and types of pest, all fall pests show up for the same reason. They are looking for food, water, and shelter for the winter.
Almost all pests struggle to survive the cold winter months. Their internal calendar begins warning them that it is time to seek shelter. This is why many fall insects, rodents, and arthropods begin searching for cracks and crevices in their pursuit of warmth and protection. Mice that have thrived all summer outdoors begin coming in from the fields in search of a place to spend the winter and raise their young.
As with all things in life, pre-planning and preparation eliminates a lot of grief. Just a few preventive measures will keep many of these unwanted fall pests from invading your home. Most of these unwelcome guests can fit through the tiniest of holes and cracks. A thorough inspection of the exterior of the home is the best place to begin applying prevention techniques. Look for any cracks, crevices, and holes and repair accordingly. A crack or gap in the foundation or around windows and doors can be easily repaired with caulking. Seal around all utility entrances coming in the home. Door sweeps and garage door seals wear in time and occasionally need to be replaced.
