Imagine that you are snuggled up on the sofa absentmindedly munching on popcorn while watching your favorite movie. The rain and wind are howling outside, but you don’t even notice. Your full attention is on the screen as your movie is building up to your favorite scene. Sure, you have seen it a thousand times, but that doesn’t matter a bit. You are still completely involved in the emotion of the scene waiting to see what is going to happen – well, of course, you know what is about to happen, but you don’t let that dampen the suspense. It is as if you are watching it for the very first time – again. You reach for a fist full of popcorn while keeping your gaze focused on the screen when all of a sudden you see a movement out of the corner of your eye. Not wanting to miss your favorite scene, you quickly glance in the direction of the moving object only to find that you are staring into the face of a mouse. Instantly, that movie doesn’t seem as important as you let out a scream and spring to your feet landing on the back of the couch.
This scenario, or one very similar, is played out in homes all across Montgomery County every fall as mice are on the move looking for a nice, warm, cozy home to spend the winter in. They are wise little creatures and prepare for the cold, snowy winter by finding a new home before it hits. There are several things to consider when trying to avoid harboring mice for the winter, and keep in mind that mice can squeeze through a crack as little as ¼’’! These hints can help you prepare for the coming fall migration of furry little mice.
Ventilate attics, crawlspaces, and basements properly
Seal cracks and holes – especially where utilities and pipes enter your home
Replace weather stripping around doors and windows
Repair screens on doors and windows
Store food in air tight containers
Remove trash and garbage regularly
Eliminate moisture from leaking pipes, HVAC units etc.
