Let’s talk termites! Termites are a species of pest that are active year-round. However, now that spring is right around the corner and the weather is warming, they are becoming even more active and damaging. Reproductive termites will soon be swarming from their colony to create new nesting sites and produce even more termites! Because of this, the pros at American Pest want to talk about termites and go over some steps that you can take around your property and home to help prevent these dangerous and damaging pests from invading!
First, we want to remind you that Termite Awareness Week is being celebrated from March 13- 19. The goal of this week is to educate homeowners about these damaging pests and offer tips and solutions to help prevent infestations. By promoting proactive measures against these pests, we hope to help protect current homeowners and those in the process of buying new homes against these pests.
Termites are difficult pest to prevent and even more difficult to notice once they have infested your home, but there are some steps you can take to help prevent termites from getting into and nesting within the structural wood of your home.
Termite Prevention Tips:
Termites are attracted to moisture, so reducing areas of moisture in and around your home can go a long way in preventing problems with them. Make sure that gutters are running freely to direct water away from the exterior of your home, fix leaky outdoor fixtures, and repair leaking indoor faucets or pipes.
Remove and/or replace any water damaged wood.
Inspect your home’s foundation and fix any cracks or crevices found in it.
Caulk gaps found around basement windows and doors.
Create an 18 inch gap between the soil and any wooden elements of your home.
Store firewood a distance (at least 20 feet) away from the exterior of your home
Remove piles of debris, fallen trees, and decaying tree stumps from your property.
Look for signs of termites like- mud tunnels running toward your home, splintered or blistered paint, hollow sounding walls when you tap on them, and piles of wings underneath doors and windows.
American Pest provides our customers with expert termite solutions that completely and continuously get rid of and protect your home from termites. Our services include a thorough termite inspection completed by one of our trained inspectors, the installation of the Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System, continuous monitoring to prevent future infestations, and of course regular maintenance.
