With Blooming Flowers Come Stinging Insects

Bees & Wasps    Tips/Solutions

For those in Maryland, Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia, it is good to be aware of the stinging insects in our region, what you should do should you be on the receiving end of a stinger and what to do if you discover a nest on your property.

It is important to note that stinging insects are often beneficial insects that help control spiders and other insect populations, as well as pollinate plants. The problem lies when these stinging insects create nests on our property. Not many bees, wasps or yellow jackets will attack without provocation, but if they do feel threatened they could become aggressive.

Stinging insects are considered mostly a nuisance pest, but they can pose health risks to some. Aside from their pretty powerful stings can come a severe allergic reaction in some cases. Not everyone experiences the same reaction but it is a good idea to follow these first aid tips for a sting:

  • If you begin to notice an allergic reaction taking place then seek medical attention immediately

  • If there is no allergic reaction, just a powerful sting, then try to remove the stinger right away.

  • Wash the area well with soap and water

  • Apply an antibiotic cream to help prevent any infections

  • Apply ice to help reduce swelling

  • Take an ibuprofen to help manage pain

If you happen to spot a nest on your property, attached to the exterior of your home, or even inside of your home, contact American Pest right away! Do not attempt to remove nests on your own as the result may cause serious harm to you or family members. Instead let our trained pest control professionals identify the location of the nest and safely remove it from your property. Don’t let the threat of stinging insects prevent you from enjoying the season!
